"I’m gonna make 90"
I didn’t want an aide; I don’t get along well with strangers. My daughter knows me and loves me; she looks right past my attitude. With her as my aide, I think I’m gonna hit 90. You watch. I’m gonna be the first one in my family to make 90.
"A blessing"
I have multiple sclerosis. After my second hospitalization, I realized I needed help. To have my best friend be here for me is a blessing. My caseworker, Ashley, is very helpful — I feel comfortable calling anytime. And having someone I trust work for me keeps my mind at ease.
"Mom is getting stronger, and it feels so good”
We brought in a couple of aides for my mother, but I could tell she wasn’t happy. Now I get to care for Mom daily — and she’s smiling and laughing. I feel really good, knowing she’s getting stronger each day.
"Best program ever"
I’ve had aides in the past, but it always ended badly. This is one of the best programs ever. I’m so happy that my niece is helping me.

ALTCS stands for the Arizona Long-Term Care System. But what is ALTCS exactly and how does the program help Arizona residents? Simply put, the ALTCS program is a state Medicaid program that provides long-term care services to eligible individuals in Arizona. The program is designed to assist elderly, disabled, and medically needy individuals who require ongoing care and support in their daily living activities.
To be eligible for ALTCS, Arizona residents must meet certain criteria, including age, disability, and income requirements. Generally, applicants must meet nursing home level of care. Additionally, they must have limited income and assets, as ALTCS is a means-tested program.
There are several steps in the application process for ALTCS. Arizona residents must complete an application and provide information about their medical condition, income, and assets. The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) then reviews the application to determine eligibility. An eligibility interview is conducted to gather additional information. If approved, beneficiaries can choose a health plan that manages their case.
ALTCS primarily serves individuals with limited income and assets. However, the program employs income and asset limits, which means not everyone may qualify based on financial criteria alone. It’s worth noting that ALTCS considers certain exemptions, such as disregarding certain income sources for specific applicants. Overall, eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis, taking various factors into account.
ALTCS provides a comprehensive range of long-term care services to its beneficiaries. These services include nursing home care, in-home care, adult foster care, and assisted living services. Additionally, ALTCS benefits cover medical and behavioral health services, prescription medications, durable medical equipment, and therapies like physical therapy and occupational therapy.
Yes, ALTCS beneficiaries can switch between care settings depending on their needs. For instance, if a person’s health improves, they may choose to move from a nursing home to in-home care if it becomes a more suitable option. Similarly, if their health deteriorates, they can transition to a higher level of care, such as moving from in-home care to a nursing home.
Yes, family members can provide care under ALTCS. Spouses are allowed to become an ALTCS paid caregiver, and adult children may be eligible to become paid caregivers under the “Adult Child” exception, provided they meet specific requirements, and their parent meets the criteria for needing nursing home-level care.
