No. In Missouri, spouses are not eligible to be paid caregivers through Medicaid programs. However, other family members such as children, relatives, or even close friends may qualify to provide care and receive compensation.
Yes. In Missouri, adult children can often be paid to care for their parents through state Medicaid programs. This allows you to support your mom or dad at home while receiving financial assistance for the care you already provide.
In Missouri, family caregivers can be paid through several Medicaid waiver programs that provide home and community-based services (HCBS). These waivers are designed to keep loved ones at home while offering financial support to caregivers.
To qualify, the person receiving care must have Medicaid, live in Missouri, and need help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, or mobility. They also must be at least 18 years old and able to direct their own care or have someone they trust to help make care decisions. It’s important to note that Medicare alone does not qualify someone for these programs.
Missouri offers several waivers that allow family caregivers to receive pay, including:
- Children with Developmental Disabilities Waiver – Supports children ages 0–17 with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
- Developmental Disabilities Comprehensive Waiver – Available for individuals of all ages with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
- Aged and Disabled Waiver – Helps seniors and adults with disabilities who would otherwise need nursing home care.
- Independent Living Waiver – For adults ages 18–64 with physical disabilities, promoting independence at home.
- Partnership for Hope Waiver – Supports individuals of all ages with autism, intellectual disabilities, or developmental disabilities.
